They are responsible for ensuring that students have a say in how the Union is run, how the University is governed, and works closely with the Senior Management Team to ensure that the Union’s finances and processes are set up to deliver effectively for our members.

Key Responsibilities:

• The SU President will be Chair of the Executive Committee made up of the four full-time Officers and will act as the lead spokesperson for the Union.
• They are a representative of Leeds Beckett students nationally as the lead representative at the National NUS Conference. Closer to home they will also help govern the University by sitting on the Board of Governors.
• Working closely with the Chief Executive to hold the staff of the Students’ Union to account and to oversee how the Union’s finances are allocated.
• Working closely with the Commercial and Communications Teams to ensure we are offering students the best services and that our student communications are engaging and relevant.
• Working to maximise the engagement of students in SU activities and democracy.

They are the lead on anything that is related to academic studies and is responsible for assisting the Student Voice & Insight team to support and train the body of Course Representatives.

Key Responsibilities:

• Working closely with the Student Voice & Insight team to raise the profile of the work of Course Reps, deliver Course Rep induction training, and attending meetings of the School student feedback Fora.
• Sitting on several important University boards and committees, including Board of Governors, Academic Board and Academic Quality & Standards Committee, and ensuring that the University’s academic rules and regulations are fit for purpose.
• Working to ensure that the Leeds Beckett academic experience is inclusive for all students, maintaining a high standard of assessment and feedback and leading campaigns relating to academic issues experienced by students, such as hidden fees.

They ensure that the Union and University help students identify and deal with issues relating to their wellbeing so that they enjoy their time at University. They will also support and lead welfare campaigns to ensure students are as happy and healthy as possible both in the University and in their local community.

• They will have a working relationship with SU and University colleagues to ensure student mental health is a priority.
• They will work with the SU and the University to increase students’ overall well-being and ensure that inclusive support is in place at the right time and in the right way.
• They will work with stakeholders including the University, police, and city council to ensure our students are safe both at university and in our local community.

They ensure that student societies and their members are supported, raise the profile of volunteers and volunteering opportunities within the Students’ Union and work with our Activities and Events teams to put on more inclusive and inviting events for our students, ensuring these are both relevant to students and help them to feel happy, healthy and develop as people.

Key Responsibilities:

• The Activities & Events Officer will work closely with the Activities Team to promote the benefits of joining or creating a society raise the profile of student volunteering and supporting students to engage.
• They will get involved with Societies and volunteering events, attending and helping to publicise these opportunities to students.
• They will maintain a good relationship with the Sport & Active Lifestyle team to ensure students engaged with sporting activities feel included in the SU.
• They will have a working relationship with the Events team to make our SU events even better, suggesting ideas for new events to engage students, as well as making our Freshers and Re-Freshers programmes more inclusive and inviting.

The National Union of Students (NUS) is led by students and students' unions. You actively shape and lead their campaigns and every year, and they run a series of events across the UK to bring together students and build focused, high-impact campaigns that can win.

These events are NUS' democratic conferences. At these events, students come together to grasp at the root of the big issues facing students today and shape upcoming priorities for students, students' unions, and NUS.

How many places are available?

Leeds Beckett Students' Union (LBSU) can send 7 Reps to NUS National Conference. These are voluntary roles.

The Students’ Union President is automatically the Lead Rep.

Six places are available in these elections and at least three must self-define as women.

When would I need to be available?

If you are successfully elected as a NUS Conference Rep you must be available to attend the conference in Blackpool on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th April 2024.

We will also invite you to attend a briefing before you attend the conference and you will be expected to report back on your experience at conference when you return.

LBSU will provide you with accommodation, travel and expenses to support your attendance and participation.

Conference priorities in 2024

In 2024, there will be a number of priorities for NUS Conference Reps to discuss in the run up to and at each of the conferences.

• An obvious big focus will be the next General Election, which is likely to happen in 2024.
• There will also be big changes in NUS' organising model, with final proposals submitted to the Conferences.
• At National Conference this will include reviewing proposals for the creation of NUS England, regional organising and exploring student representation based on policy passed at Conference in 2023.
• Plus, the usual business undertaken by NUS Reps... electing the national officers and leaders, setting NUS priorities and scrutinising the current national officers.
