Hi there! I’m Chris Tillyer, a computer science student here at Leeds Beckett. In the years of studying here, I’ve been a part of a few communities - throughout this time, I have noticed a few things that I’d like to change about the Student Union. The tools that I will call on the Student Union and University to provide will include:
-
Strengthen the relationship between the Student Union and the University itself in order to improve the existing facilities here at the University, making the SU the go-to place if students need a space to use.
-
An immediate increase in the availability of spaces on campus that students can book and an overhaul of the booking system. It will be designed in collaboration with members of the community aimed at improving the relationship between Student Union and all students.
-
The coordination of a proactive approach in advertising and providing the support to all Societies, no matter the size or age of the Society - demonstrating that Societies are a key part of University, showcasing the achievements of them and other extracurricular activities.
-
Providing coaching on membership growth and other practical skills, aiding societies and volunteers to achieve their full potential.
It’s clear to the people who’ve met me that I wasn’t the most sociable person when I came to Leeds Beckett University, but feeling accepted by the Games Society allowed me to grow as a person. Throughout the year, I noticed that I was coming out of my shell more and more as I found a group of people that shared my passions and that I was excited to spend time with.
Although I’d like to think it is, the Games Society isn’t for everyone. That said, the Student Union offers something for everyone, and my first goal as Activities & Events Officer would be to make sure that as many students find a Society to call their home as possible, supporting the Student Union in preventing people in often overlooked groups from slipping into mindsets that prevent growth and purpose, ultimately harming their University experience.
During my last year of university, I was proud to be elected to be the president of the Games Society, which, at the time of writing this, is one of the most popular non-sports Societies at Leeds Beckett. During this time, I learnt how to actively manage a society, maintain a high level of participation from members and demonstrated that I was able to make improvements to the already great Society that I inherited.
Now I am approaching my tenure as President, I am looking to use all of this expertise to make sure the other Societies have the tools they need to thrive. The Student Union has already changed my life for the better, it laid the foundation for lasting friendships which in turn made University a more comfortable experience. It’s now time that I gave back.
Vote for me for Activities & Events Officer. We can make a difference.
