Lucy MacDonald

Hi! I’m Lucy and I am standing for the position of President and NUS delegate for this election. I am currently your Welfare and Community Officer which I’m finding a fantastic and rewarding experience. I love being able to speak and work closely with amazing students as well as represent you at a higher level.

I truly believe in the student movement and what it represents. Students have a great chance of making long-lasting change and if you elect me as your President, I will continue to fight for what our students need. My biggest achievements this year have been listening to your opinions and concerns through our Student Safety and Consent survey and campaigning for changes to happen through the data results. I was part of organising the 44th Reclaim the Night March in Leeds and have also pushed for more safety measures locally by having conversations with the local council and police.

My main objective next academic year would be to improve sustainability in the university and make sure students are involved in combating climate change at LBU. It is now vital for higher education institutions to make real commitments to the climate crisis and have attainable targets in place to reduce their carbon emissions. We deserve to have fewer anxieties about the environment as it is already affecting students’ health, education and finances. I would campaign for more eco-friendly practices to be in place at the university and organise a student-led sustainability week with events and workshops so we can make change and feel empowered.

My other priorities are to continue to improve student safety at LBU and make sure that the campus communitoes look out for each other and are allies to marginalised groups. My work on student safety has so far covered the night-time economy and street safety including the drink spiking epidemic and the wider issue of sexual harassment which I would continue to prioritise. As well as making student safety a key objective, I would focus on improving student finances to make sure students are getting the most out of university expenditure, for example lobbying for more bursaries and hardship funds to be made available.

Overall, I am extremely dedicated to represent you and improve the lives of students through my work and activism. I will not let you down if you re-elect me! Thank you for taking the time to read this and please vote for me as President and NUS delegate.
