We want to reach out to our members to provide reassurance following the weekend of unrest in cities across the UK, including Leeds last weekend. The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority, and we are committed to fostering an environment on campus where everyone feels safe and supported. We are proud of our diverse and inclusive community at Leeds Beckett, and we are dedicated to ensuring that every student feels valued and protected.
Leeds Beckett Students' Union will always condemn any form of violence, hatred, or discrimination. In our university community there is no place for racism, islamophobia, any form of harassment or sexual misconduct. If you witness a hate crime, you can report it to Stop Hate UK or the Police on 999 or 101 for non-emergencies, who will support you with this process. Contact Tell Mama, a condifential and independent support service, to report in anti-Muslim hate.
If you or someone you know is a student, colleague or visitor of our university, and has experienced any of these forms of unacceptable behaviour, you can let us know anonymously or you can provide your details and receive advice through Support Report Respect: www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/our-community/support-report-respect.
As well as the support offered by Student Advice, the university's Chaplaincy is also available to provide the care and guidance you may need during this time. The Chaplaincy is here for students and staff from all faiths and religious beliefs and those of none and offers a safe space for our community. Some of our student communities and societies are still active over the summer and will welcome new members that are seeking a positive environment to connect with like-minded people: www.leedsbeckettsu.co.uk
We know that many of our students will have been affected by the recent events and that many might be experiencing feelings of fear and uncertainty right now, but please remember that you are not alone and that we have a united community at Leeds Beckett University. We will always stand together against hate and prejudice. We will be working with the university, Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police to ensure that our city remains a peaceful, safe and tolerant place to be for our students. West Yorkshire Police is monitoring the situation closely and protecting our community. They also advised people to seek information from reputable sources as there are lots of rumours and disinformation across social media that create more fear.
Stay safe and take care of one another!
