In February, we're observing LGBT History Month in the UK. A whole month of learning and celebrating queer history! It's an opportunity aimed to educate people and make members of the LGBT+ community visible in all their rich diversity. Education is such an important part of the fight against injustice and stereotypes. The conversations we have had in the last few weeks should be ongoing and not confined to certain months of the year! Let's continue to learn and strive for a better future

We asked members of our LGBT+ Students Community ''what does LGBT+ History Month mean to you?'', here are their answers:

“It makes me feel seen and recognised, it is so important to remember and look back on LGBT+ history and remember how much we have fought for and what we have achieved. There is still a long way to go but I am hopeful.”

“Celebrating and remembering all those who gave their time, energy and sometimes even their lives so people like me could enjoy the freedoms we have today.”

“LGBT+ History Month is incredibly important to me, as we are still witnessing change happen today. It is fascinating to see how far we have come as a society and what needed to be done by fellow LGBT members and allies to achieve this.”

Do you have any LGBT+ spaces in Leeds that you like to go to, that you'd recommend to other students?

“I like Hyde Park Book club it is not necessarily a LGBT+ space but it is very inclusive and I feel safe there.”

Do you have a message or any words of wisdom for other LGBT+ students at Leeds Beckett?

“I would say, incorporate LBGT+ in your dissertation if you can, it is always nice to read and reference queer authors/ writers or researchers in your work.”

“Don't let anyone make you feel anything less than the amazing person you are. Be your whole self, unapologetically.”

“You can't help who you fall in love with, be yourself, love one another and express your feelings.”
