LGBTQ+ History Month is celebrated in February here in the UK! This is used as a month to reflect on where the LGBTQ+ community has come from and the leaps and bounds they have made to make the future a better, and more understanding place for the next generation.
The 2024 theme celebrates people’s contributions to the field of medicine and healthcare in the past and present and applauds the LGBTQ+ community that work as healthcare professionals across the NHS. The goal for each history month is to raise funds for education, businesses, services and organisations to lessen the stigma around the LGBTQ+ community.
At Leeds Beckett Students' Union we have an array of societies, including the new LGBTQ@LBU society. This student group is a place to feel welcome, make new friends and get involved in events on campus! LGBTQ@LBU want to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and make a safe and fun space where everyone is welcome: whether you’re LGBTQ, questioning or an ally. You can find out more about the society here!
Our LGBT+ Students' Community is another way to get involved on campus! This Community is open to all self-defining students and is a great place to meet other people and get involved in campaigning work right here at Leeds Beckett. You can find out more and get involved here.
To finish the month off with a bang, Leeds Queer Film Festival is hosting an evening full of stalls, films, activities and talks on the 24th of February. This event will be an evening for everyone to feel safe, loved and appreciated whilst being comfortable to join in with the actives being put on, including cushion making, One-Page Zine and Ping Pong. And if activities aren’t your thing, we’re sure films will be! Hosted at Leeds City Museum, this event is too good to miss!
Whether you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community or a supportive friend, this month gives you the opportunity to spread awareness and make new connections with likeminded people.
